Qualifying trials of the Olympic Games are an event that can be very emotional for both athletes and spectators. This was especially noticeable when Simone Biles' husband, Jonathan Owens, openly expressed his joy for the American gymnast as she dominated throughout the event.
Finishing the competition as the champion in all program events, Biles automatically secured her spot on the women’s gymnastics team for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In his Instagram story, Owens, 28, posted an image of the leaderboard with Simone’s name at the top and his own message.
«We're going to Paris», - Owens wrote. «Damn, I’m so proud».
However, since the Olympic Games run from July 26 to August 11, he may not be able to attend the entire competition. Biles confirmed that Owens will be in Paris to support her «for some time» before he has to return to training camp.
«I think it’s super exciting that we can be in our element and support each other’s dreams and goals», - she said.
At 27 years old, she became the oldest American gymnast to compete in the Olympics in the last 72 years. She is also the fourth American to compete in her third Olympic Games. She will join Lee, 21, and Chiles, 23, with whom she competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, as well as newcomer Hezli Rivera.
Confident and relieved after completing the trials in the US, Biles stated: «I knew I wasn’t finished after my performances in Tokyo».
Earlier, Biles withdrew from several events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, citing mental health issues and experiencing «twists» that led to her disorientation in the air during competitions. However, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles is determined and clearly understands her goals and what she wants to achieve.
«I know we are stronger than we showed in Tokyo. So this should be for us, because it’s not for anyone else, because we do it for ourselves and out of love for the sport and the country. So we will step onto the arena and do everything we can»
