Simone Biles and Suni Lee are great athletes not only in gymnastics, but also skilled creators of digital content. After their victory in the women’s gymnastics team final, the 27-year-old and 21-year-old athletes were seen planning to shoot several videos on TikTok.
On Tuesday, July 30, cameras captured the moment when Simone told her partner that she wanted to shoot a TikTok, «chewing on gold medals», - while Suni replied, «Okay! And I want to shoot the one that says, 'Imagine what we would be doing if we hadn’t won'». Both Olympic champions laughed, agreeing to create the video later that evening.
Fortunately for fans, both ideas were posted on social media.
Suni and Simone’s achievement at the Paris Olympics came after a long journey. They competed together in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics, where the gymnastics goat had to withdraw from the team competition due to the «twisties» — a psychological block that prevents a gymnast from knowing where they are in the air. Suni eventually won the gold medal in the women’s all-around final.
After the games, Simone faced extensive criticism for withdrawing from the games. Online trolls called her a «quitter», - and others questioned the artistic gymnast why she left her teammates, even though she remained on the sidelines to support them. The highly decorated Olympic champion opened up about what happened in her Netflix documentary series, Simone Biles: Upward.
«Wherever I went, I felt like they saw 'loser' or 'quitter' on my forehead», - she says in one of the episodes of the series. «I always felt like everyone was watching me, even if they weren’t».
Reflecting on her Olympic comeback and journey to Paris, Simone said, «This time I’m coming back for real for myself. I never want to look back in ten years and say, 'What if I could have gone through another Olympic cycle?' At least I tried. I didn’t want to be scared of the sport anymore, because, you know, so much happened in this sport, so much scared me that I couldn’t let it take away this last thing from me».
As for Suni, the former Auburn University student was diagnosed with two rare forms of kidney disease after the 2020 Olympics. As a result, she temporarily stopped competing in gymnastics and faced setbacks. However, she was determined to return to the Olympic stage.
«We didn’t think I would be here», - Suni said on TODAY earlier this month. «So going through all these events and… all that we had to go through this week to get to where we are now, it was just such a difficult, incredible journey»
