Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles took second and third place respectively in the women’s floor final at the Olympics in Paris — and both paid homage to the gold medalist, Rebecca Andrade from Brazil.
Simone, 27, finished her iconic routine on the floor with a score of 14.133. After stepping out of bounds during her performance, the gymnast-goat received a penalty of -0.6 points, but she was happy after completing her third Olympic Games. As for Jordan, 23, she initially received a score of 13.166, which would have placed her in fifth place. However, she contested the difficulty of her routine. After a brief review, the judges updated her score to 13.766, securing her third place and the bronze medal.
After the score change, Jordan embraced her coaches and Simone, seemingly crying with joy, while the arena erupted in applause.
As for Rebecca, the 25-year-old gymnast from Brazil, she received her first gold medal at the Olympics in Paris, scoring 14.166 points from the judges. She is now the most decorated Olympic champion in the history of Brazil.
During the award ceremony, Simone and Jordan showed their support for Rebecca by bowing to her. In response, Rebecca took both of their hands, and all three Olympians closed the final gymnastics event together.
After the award ceremony, Jordan praised Rebecca.
«First of all, it was a completely black podium. Secondly, why not just give her our flowers?» Jordan said, according to NBC. «She not only gave flowers to Simone, but to many of us in the United States. So giving it back — that’s what makes it so beautiful. I felt like it was necessary».
Simone and Rebecca won several medals at this Olympics with scores that were almost identical. Throughout the games, Simone praised her competitor and gymnastics colleague, but the gymnast-goat also joked that she no longer wants to compete against Rebecca.
«I'm tired. She’s very close to me — I’ve never had such a close athlete», - Simone said at a press conference in Paris. «It definitely made me be vigilant and brought out the best athlete in me. So I’m happy and proud to compete with her, but — no. I’ve never been so tense. Thank you, Rebecca».
Simone added that she greatly respects the Brazilian gymnast, calling her «such a good competitor»
