Donald Trump is known for his blunt remarks to the press, but one exchange on board Air Force One between the president and a female journalist went viral after he called her a «pig». The journalist’s identity was later identified as Catherine Lucey from Bloomberg, although she has not yet commented publicly on the incident.
Nevertheless, several prominent journalists came to Lucey’s defense. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins tweeted, «My White House press corps colleagues @marykbruce and @catherine_lucey both do an excellent job».
Here’s what we know so far about Lucey and the viral exchange with Trump.
Although her identity was not immediately revealed, several sources identified the female journalist as Lucey.
No, but Trump cursed at ABC News journalist Mary Bruce in a separate incident. During a press conference on November 18, 2025 with Trump and Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Bruce asked the prince, «Your Royal Highness, American intelligence has concluded that you orchestrated the brutal murder of a journalist. The families of the victims of 9/11 are outraged that you are here in the Oval Office. Why should Americans trust you? And the same to you, Mr. President».
Trump quickly responded, saying that ABC News should lose its license.
As seen in the viral video of the exchange, the woman — who apparently was Lucey — asked the Republican a question on board Air Force One about Jeffrey Epstein’s files and his past relationship with the deceased sex offender.
«If there’s nothing compromising in the files, sir…» the journalist could be heard asking Trump off-camera before Trump waved his finger in front of her face and said, «Quiet. Quiet, pig».
In a statement to The Guardian, the White House defended Trump’s comment to the journalist and accused her of «inappropriate» behavior.
«This journalist behaved inappropriately and unprofessionally towards her colleagues on the plane», - the statement read. «If you dish it out, you have to be able to take it».
Lucey is an experienced journalist working at Bloomberg, according to her author biography on the news agency. She previously worked as a White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.
A representative from Bloomberg News issued a statement to The Guardian shortly after Lucey’s exchange with the president went viral.
«Our White House journalists perform an important public service by asking questions without fear or bias», - the representative said. «We continue to focus on honest and accurate coverage of issues of public interest».
Just days before he called her a «pig», - Trump, according to The Telegraph, cursed at Lucey during a previous conversation. The Telegraph reported that Lucey asked Trump about Tucker Carlson’s interview with Nick Fuentes at an airstrip at West Palm Beach airport. Trump replied, «You're the worst! You’re with Bloomberg, right? You’re the worst! I don’t understand why they even keep you»
