Shannon Sharpe has been lucky this year — in a good way — after his viral interview with Cat Williams earlier this year on his podcast Club Shay Shay.

The success of the interview, which garnered nearly 75 million views, as well as other ventures, helped him secure a multi-year contract with ESPN. However, his position in the network now seems to be in jeopardy after the media personality broadcasted a private moment with an unknown woman live, during which a sexually explicit audio file was played for his approximately 3.2 million Instagram followers. Sharpe tried to rectify the situation after the video was released, initially claiming that his account had been hacked. He later admitted that the incident was solely his mistake.

Reactions were varied, as nothing illegal had occurred, but fans expressed disappointment over the R-rated situation, feeling understandably awkward considering that Sharpe, well-versed in social media and public platforms, made such a mistake.

After the scandal, here’s what we know about Sharpe’s work status at ESPN.

ESPN has not yet commented on the incident, but when the deal between the network and Sharpe was signed in June, there was broad optimism about the partnership.

«Shannon Sharpe has become an incredible addition to the First Take team, enriching the show’s dynamics with his engaging presence and insightful commentary», - said David Roberts, head of events and studio production at ESPN, in a statement about the deal that expanded Sharpe’s role on First Take, ESPN’s morning debate show with Stephen A. Smith and host Molly Qerim. «Sharpe's chemistry with Stephen A. Smith has elevated our debates to a new level and has become another key reason why First Take is the premier destination for morning sports discussions».

Sharpe has not been fired from ESPN — at least, at the time of publication, but the sports commentator continues to rectify the situation, partly in an attempt to protect his contract.

In an emergency episode of the Nightcap podcast, which he hosts with former NFL player Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson, long-time tight end for the Denver Broncos addressed the incident, apologizing and explaining how it happened.

«My heart sank», - Sharpe recalled when his marketer called to inform him of the situation. «I called my agent, I called the agency, I called ESPN, and I thought, just tell them the truth. My phone wasn’t hacked; it wasn’t a joke. It was me, as a healthy, active man». He clarified that an employee named Jordan falsely claimed that his account had been hacked, a statement that Sharpe confirmed as false.

Sharpe expressed that he is «very disappointed in himself» and admitted: «I let a lot of people down». He continued: «Obviously, I’m embarrassed. As someone who is very private, to have one of your most intimate moments — audio — heard by the whole world, it’s humiliating».

He added: «There are a lot of people who rely on Shannon to be a professional at all times, and I always strive to be a professional, even when I’m behind closed doors».

No one Sharpe works with has turned away from him yet. Instead, an adult company told TMZ Sports that they would offer him $ 100,000 «if he wants to change careers»
