In June, at Adams' request, Combs returned the key in response to the release of a video showing Combs attacking his ex-girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie Ventura. She described their relationship as a «cycle of violence, abuse, and sex trafficking».
A video published by CNN in May appeared to show Combs physically attacking a woman in 2016. Shortly before that, Mayor Adams sent a letter to Combs' addresses in New York and Los Angeles asking him to return the key to the city, expressing that he was «deeply disturbed» by the video.

In a recently revealed indictment, federal prosecutors claimed that Combs threatened and assaulted women to satisfy his sexual desires, forcing them to participate in recorded sexual acts he called «Freak Offs». Additionally, the music mogul has faced allegations of rape and sexual harassment in at least nine civil lawsuits in the past year.
Adams was charged with bribery, fraud, and soliciting donations, making him the first sitting mayor in modern history to face federal criminal charges.
