Ruby Franke’s story is once again under the spotlight following the release of the three-part documentary film on Hulu, «Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke». In 2020, the shameful child abuse of the former YouTube vlogger and mother was exposed, and later she was arrested along with her friend Jodi Hildebrandt, who was also guilty of child abuse. Now that Franke’s name is once again making headlines, many want to know how long she will spend in prison.
The plot of «Devil in the Family» reads: «With exclusive access to the Frankes, their friends and neighbors, as well as over a thousand hours of unseen video footage from their YouTube channels, 'Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke' delves through social media reactions to explore the untold story behind Ruby Franke’s case: part family tragedy, part coming-of-age narrative, part cautionary tale of the dangers of life online».
Learn more about Franke’s prison time and case below.
Franke was a YouTube vlogger who ran the now-defunct channel «8 Passengers», - which ultimately gained nearly 3 million subscribers. Several days a week, she documented the life of her Mormon family with husband Kevin Franke and their six children.
Although her YouTube channel attracted millions, some noticed extreme disciplinary methods that Franke used on her children. One of the most controversial punishments was making one of her children sleep on a beanbag in the basement for several months.
Franke was arrested in August 2023 along with Hildebrandt on six charges of aggressive child abuse. However, as part of a plea deal, two of the charges were dropped in Franke’s case. She is currently behind bars at the Utah Department of Corrections in Salt Lake City, Utah, according to TODAY.
In February 2024, Franke received four separate prison sentences ranging from 1 to 15 years, to be served consecutively. She must serve a minimum of four years. If Franke serves all four sentences, the former vlogger’s prison time will total a maximum of 60 years. However, the strictest punishment in Utah law is 30 years. Therefore, Franke will not serve more than 30 years in prison. The length of Franke’s prison sentence will be determined by the Board of Pardons and Parole in December 2026, according to TV Insider.
