Ethel was the wife of the late RFK, who was assassinated in June 1968. After her husband’s death, Ethel dedicated her life to public service and the fight for human rights. Originally from Chicago, she later founded her non-profit organization, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.
According to Joe’s tweet, she passed away from complications «related to a stroke» that she had suffered a week ago.
«With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy», - Joe wrote in the tweet. «She passed away this morning from complications related to a stroke she suffered last week. In addition to her lifelong work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who all love her dearly».
Joe also noted in his statement that the Kennedy family «finds solace in knowing she is once again in the arms of her love, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie».
«Please keep her in your hearts and prayers», - Joe added in his tweet.
Two days ago, Joe announced that Ethel had suffered a stroke and was hospitalized.
«Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke in her sleep on Thursday morning», - Joe wrote in a separate tweet on Tuesday, October 8. «She was taken to a local hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. She is comfortable, receiving the best possible care, and surrounded by family».
In closing his statement, Joe emphasized that Ethel was «a strong woman who lived a wonderfully full life» and insisted that the Kennedys «take care of her».
