Actress Dame Maggie Smith, a two-time Oscar winner, best known for her role as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series and as the Countess in the series «Downton Abbey», - passed away on Friday, as confirmed by her publicist and children. She was 89 years old.

Smith had one of the most successful careers among all actors in the world. Born in 1934, she began her career on stage at just 17, appearing in William Shakespeare’s «Twelfth Night» in 1952. Her illustrious career included numerous interpretations of Shakespeare’s works, including the 1965 film «Othello». She starred in many acclaimed and beloved films, winning her first Oscar in 1970 for her role in «The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie» and her second in 1979 for «California Suite».

Here is all we know at the moment about the circumstances of Smith’s death.

The cause of Smith’s death is currently unknown at the time of publication. In their statement, Maggie’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stevens, confirmed that she passed away «peacefully in hospital» on September 27, 2024.

«She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother», - the sons said in a statement released through publicist Claire Dobbs.

In 2009, Smith revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after a lump was discovered in 2008, in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. The actress expressed her fears after the diagnosis, saying, «It's like a blow to the head, and I don’t know what the future holds for me, if anything. I don’t think there’s much there, because of my age — there just isn’t. Everything’s been done. I don’t know what will be».

Smith also battled Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland, in 1988, but she recovered after radiation therapy and surgery.

The London-born actress married her first husband, English actor Sir Robert Stevens, on June 29, 1967. They had two sons and divorced in 1973. After many years of illness, he passed away in 1995 at the age of 64 due to complications during surgery.

Smith’s eldest son, Chris, born in 1967, has two children with his wife Suki Stevens: Daisy Grace Stevens and Nathaniel Stevens. Her second son, Toby, born in 1969, has three children with his wife Anna-Louise Plowman: son Elijah Alister Stevens, born in 2007, and two daughters, Tallulah Tara and Kura Stevens, born in 2009 and 2010 respectively
