The first African American congresswoman in the US Congress, Mia Love,
Mia Love, the first black Republican woman elected to Congress, passed away after battling cancer. Her family confirmed this news in a statement on March 23, 2025.

«With deep gratitude for Mia’s profound impact on our lives, we want you to know that she peacefully passed away today», - Mia’s family said in a statement posted on her X account. «She was at home, surrounded by family. During the celebration of her life and the avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly broke the bonds of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared to the heavens. We are grateful for the many kind wishes, prayers, and condolences. We are spending time with family and will provide information on funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the coming days».

Originally from New York, the Haitian-American gradually rose in politics, becoming the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, in 2010. She then served as the U.S. Representative for Utah’s 4th congressional district from 2015 to 2019. In addition to her political career, Mia also worked as a political commentator on CNN.

Mia’s husband is Jason Love, whom she met through their shared connection with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple married in December 1998.

Mia and her husband Jason raised three children together: Alessa, Abigail, and Peyton.

Mia passed away at just 49 years old.

Although the family did not disclose the cause of death, it is believed that Mia died from glioblastoma, a rapidly progressing and aggressive form of brain cancer. She was diagnosed in 2022 and given only 10−15 months to live. Mia publicly shared her cancer journey in May 2024 in an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN, where she discussed experiencing positive results from a clinical immunotherapeutic drug.

The news of Mia’s death came shortly after she confirmed on March 11, 2025, that her cancer had stopped responding to treatment. She shared this update in an open letter published in the Deseret News.

«My battle with brain cancer is coming to an end. The disease is no longer responding to treatment, and my family and I have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying every moment and creating memories for the time remaining. My life has been extended thanks to exceptional medical care, science, and outstanding professionals who have become dear friends. My extra time of life has also been the result of the faith and prayers of countless friends, known and unknown. The result of such humble faith and pleading prayers has been felt by me and my family in ways too numerous to count. I have always believed that faith and science are inseparable».

She added, «In the end, I hope that my life will have meaning and change something for the country I love, and for the family and friends I adore. I hope you will see the America I know in the years ahead, that you will hear my words in the whisper of the wind of freedom, and feel my presence in the flame of eternal principles of freedom»
