Former President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president at the age of 100, passed away on Sunday, December 29. The Carter Center confirmed that he died in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
He laid his wife, Rosalynn Carter, to rest on November 28, 2023. Rosalynn’s memorial service took place nine months after it was announced that the former president would receive palliative care in February. Jimmy «decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive palliative care instead of further medical intervention» after a series of short hospital stays, according to a statement from the Carter Center.
Shortly after being provided with palliative care due to a diagnosis of dementia, Rosalynn’s death was announced. After her passing, the former president honored her in a statement released by the Carter Center. «Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished», - he said. «She gave me wise counsel and support when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew that someone loved me and supported me».
The former Georgia senator had an incredible career as a humanitarian after his four years in the White House from 1977 to 1981. He became synonymous with the organization Habitat for Humanity and tirelessly worked as a diplomat in poor countries, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
«When I was president of the most powerful and influential nation on Earth, I had more direct influence on the world and progress and so forth», - Jimmy said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2017. «But the last 35 years since I left the White House have been the most challenging, interesting, adventurous, unpredictable, and satisfying times of my life… And the things I tried to do and couldn’t because of changing circumstances and so forth. But I did the best I could. As my vice president said, 'We told the truth, we obeyed the law, and we kept the peace.'»
In addition to his incredible career, Carter had a very successful personal life. He married his childhood sweetheart, Rosalynn Smith, on July 7, 1946, and they welcomed four wonderful children. In a 2015 CNN interview, the former politician said that his wife and children were «the foundation of all my enjoyment in life». He added, «We now have a large family, we have 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a total of 38 people. So we try to keep our family together and just enjoy family life».
