Hollywood mourns the death of Emmy and Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland. The actor passed away on Thursday, June 20, in Miami after a long illness, confirmed by CAA agency in an interview for Variety. He was 88 years old.

Donald’s son, Kiefer Sutherland, also confirmed the news on social media. «With a heavy heart, I inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away», - he wrote on Thursday. «I personally consider him one of the most important actors in the history of cinema. Never defeated by a role, whether it be good, bad, or ugly. He loved what he did, and did what he loved, and you can’t ask for more. He lived a life to the fullest».

In his post, Kiefer attached a photo of himself as a child, spending time with his father.

For almost 60 years, the Canadian actor found success on both the big and small screens. His acting credits include M*A*S*H, Pride and Prejudice, Klute, and the Hunger Games film series, where he played President Snow.

Recently, he appeared as Judge Parker in the series «Lowmen: Bass Reeves» and in the series «Swimming with Sharks» in 2022.

«I have incredible respect for my father’s work», - Kiefer told the Canadian press in 2016, praising his father. «I believe he is not only one of the most prolific, but also one of the great important actors in the English language».

In fact, father and son had the opportunity to act together in one film — the western «Forsaken» in 2015. «I was nervous», - Kiefer said earlier about the opportunity. «This is what I wanted to do from the beginning of my career».

When Kiefer grew up, he was raised by his mother, Shirley Douglas. In an interview with PEOPLE, he explained that he couldn’t watch many of his father’s films as they were for adults. And only when he turned 18, Kiefer learned about his father’s true talents.

«I remember feeling very bad as a son that I wasn’t aware of how productive my father was as an actor and what contribution he really made to the art of cinema», - he said to the publication in 2016.

Fortunately, he was able to see his father honored for his career, including the moment when Donald received an honorary Oscar from the Academy’s Board of Governors in 2017
