After 70 years of musical activity, Quincy Jones passed away at the age of 91. The father of seven children and the recipient of 28 Grammy awards had been battling various health problems for many years, although the cause of his death was not disclosed. During the last few years of his life, Jones openly talked about his struggles with brain aneurysms and diabetic coma that occurred at different times.

Learn more about Jones' health below.

In June 2018, in a Facebook post, Jones shared details about his past aneurysms, which «felt like a gunshot inside [his] head». He was only 41 years old when he experienced this health scare.

«In 1974, I had an aneurysm (weakening of the main artery to the brain, which led to its rupture) and it felt like a gunshot inside my head», - wrote the late jazz artist.

Jones also described the surgery he had to undergo, which lasted over seven hours. After doctors «discovered a second aneurysm that was ready to burst», - he said they had to «schedule a second surgery». This crisis, according to Jones, led his friends to organize a funeral in case of his death during the second operation.

«At that time, the prospects didn’t seem too promising, so my friends organized a wake for me at the Shrine in Los Angeles, and I actually attended my own funeral», - confessed Jones. «Honestly, everyone was there… Sidney Poitier, Sarah Vaughan, you name it. It was especially poignant to see so many people gathered to mark what could have been my 41 years of life, but now I’m in London getting ready for my 85th birthday concert tomorrow at The O2, it’s absolutely incredible».

After the operation, Jones recalled being told that he would «never be able» to play the trumpet «because of the metal implants». Nevertheless, he continued to fight, noting that he would not let health problems «stop [him] from pursuing other passions».

«If I just sat around feeling sorry for myself, I would never have been able to do 'Thriller,' 'We Are the World,' 'The Color Purple,' or anything else that happened after '74», - emphasized Jones, adding that he had a «1 in 100 chance of survival at that time».

The artist of «Heaven's Girl» concluded his Facebook post by writing: «I can honestly say that I attended my own funeral at 41 and my own birthday at 85, and I would choose the latter anytime!»

A brain aneurysm is a «bulging or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain», - according to the Mayo Clinic. While aneurysms are common, the medical site points out that a «ruptured aneurysm» can be life-threatening.

In December 2019, addressing Facebook, Jones recalled a second health scare he experienced in 2015 and how he dealt with it.

«In 2015, I fell into a diabetic coma and took what was supposed to be my last breath», - wrote the co-author of «Thriller». «By the grace of God, I survived it, but not without needing to make MAJOR changes. Raised alongside Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra, I had enough alcohol for several lifetimes, and the doctors told me I needed to stop [drinking]!!»

Jones noted that he replaced alcohol consumption with «sugar-free food», - managed to lose 50 pounds, and «started feeling like 37 again».

A diabetic coma is a «life-threatening disorder that causes unconsciousness», - according to the Mayo Clinic, and it is caused by «diabetes, dangerously high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), or dangerously low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia)».

The cause of Jones' death has not been disclosed. The family of the late artist confirmed that he passed away on November 3, 2024, in a statement dedicated to his contribution to music
