Justin Fairfax, the former lieutenant governor of Virginia, died at the age of 47 in an apparent murder-suicide involving his wife, Serena Fairfax, on April 16, 2026. According to authorities, the incident occurred at the couple’s home in Fairfax County amid an ongoing divorce, with their children also present in the house.
«Former lieutenant governor of Virginia Justin Fairfax shot his wife in their home and then shot himself», - said Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis at a press conference on April 16, 2026, outside the couple’s home in the Annandale area. «This was an ongoing domestic conflict related to what appears to be a complicated divorce».
Once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, Fairfax held public office from 2018 to 2022 before his political career was marred by scandals.
Fairfax served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022, having won election in 2017. In this role, he presided over the Virginia Senate and cast tie-breaking votes, giving him a key position in the state’s legislative process.
At the time of his election, he became one of the few Black officials elected to statewide office in Virginia, marking a significant moment in the state’s political history. Fairfax was also viewed as a rising figure in the Democratic Party and at one point was considered a potential candidate for higher office.
Before entering politics, Fairfax built a career in law, working as a federal prosecutor and then in private practice. He graduated from Duke University and earned his law degree from Columbia Law School.
In 2019, Fairfax faced sexual assault allegations from two women. One of them, Vanessa Tyson, accused him of an incident at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, while the second woman, Meredith Watson, claimed he assaulted her in 2000 when they were both students at Duke University.
Fairfax denied both allegations, asserting that the encounters were consensual or did not occur, and described the accusations as part of a campaign to discredit him.
These allegations drew national attention and prompted calls for his resignation from members of his own party, as well as leading to staff departures and professional consequences. Ultimately, he remained in office until the end of his term, but the scandal significantly impacted his political future.
Fairfax was married to Serena Fairfax, a dentist who owned her own practice. The couple met as students at Duke University and married in 2006.
In the years leading up to their deaths, they were going through a separation and were in the process of divorce. Despite this, they continued to live in the same house in Virginia, reportedly in separate rooms while legal proceedings were ongoing.
Fairfax and his wife had two children—a teenage son and a daughter.
Both children were home during the incident in April 2026, and authorities reported that their son called 911 after it occurred.
