Netflix sheds light on the death of Jason Corbett, an Irishman who was killed by his second wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Thomas «Tom» Martens, in what they claimed was self-defense. However, Corbett’s children, Jack and Sarah, claimed that they suffered abuse from the Martens and that she was lying. Corbett’s first wife, Margaret «Mags» Fitzpatrick, died from complications after an asthma attack shortly after the birth of their second child, Sarah, in November 2006.
Martens, originally from Tennessee, had previously worked as a nanny for Corbett in Ireland after the death of his first wife. Her father, Tom, had been an FBI agent for decades.
After Martens and Corbett began a relationship, he moved to North Carolina. They eventually got married and settled together in Lexington, North Carolina.
Martens and her father were found guilty of second-degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 25 years in prison.
The Martens' sentences were overturned after they agreed to a plea deal reducing the charges from second-degree murder to class D manslaughter. Both were released from prison in June 2024, and both Tom and Molly were interviewed for the Netflix documentary «Deadly American Marriage».
