The premiere of the 27th season of the series «Law & Order: Special Victims Unit» began with the funeral of Captain Donald Cragen, played by actor Dann Florek. Although Cragen had long been part of the Special Victims Unit, fans were surprised to learn that the character had died off-screen.

The cause of Cragen’s death is not explained in the premiere of the 27th season of «Law & Order: Special Victims Unit». His former colleagues gather to honor the memory of the late captain at his funeral, where a video of his retirement party is shown.
«I lived for my work», - the captain says in the video. «I don’t think that surprises anyone. And I can’t imagine my life any other way… It was a long road. It wasn’t always pleasant, and of course, it wasn’t always easy… It was a privilege to serve with you».
The captain retired back in the 15th season, leaving Detective Captain Benson (Hargitay) in charge.
Florek left the show because his character had to retire, just like real police officers in New York. However, the actor remained in the «Law & Order» franchise, appearing in other spin-offs of the series.
Since we are only at the beginning of the 27th season, little is known about Cragen’s death off-screen, but Florek did not leave the show for any special reason other than his character’s retirement.
In January 2024, Florek told People magazine about the «passing of the torch» to Benson on the show.
«It's a beautiful passing of the torch. I was able to shoot one little scene, I think I shot it on Zoom, and I was able to say to her — I’m going to cry — 'You have no idea how proud I am to say, 'Captain'», - Florek recalled. «When I started 'Special Victims Unit', many said, 'Is there room for two 'Law & Orders'? Well, we overcame that. Then I said, hopefully, we can last five [years]. Then I lasted 15 [years], and here we are already 25. It’s crazy, but good. Crazy because that’s how it should be».
