The Dutton family has lost another close person. In the 12th episode of the 5th season of the series «Yellowstone», - one of the main characters died: Colby Mayfield (played by actor Denim Richards). It seems that the fifth and final season of the popular western show Paramount is constantly killing off beloved characters by fans. Why was Colby’s death necessary?

In addition to Colby, due to the departure of star Kevin Costner as John Dutton from the show, the biggest character was removed: John Dutton. Besides John, in the fifth season, Sarah Atwood (played by actress Dawn Olivieri) also died.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, published after the release of the 12th episode, Denim pointed out that the show’s creator Taylor Sheridan «really emphasizes the realities of cowboy life» with Colby’s death on screen.
«We have this expression that everyone falls off their horse at some point in their life», - Denim told the publication. «It happens, so I think there’s an element here where I think it really wants to emphasize that this is reality. It’s kind of poetic because in the third season, Colby was trampled by horses in the river a few times».
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Christina Voros supported Denim’s statement about the cowboy way of life.
«For those who really understand the cowboy way of life and working with animals and the risks of the job — and Rip talks about it about himself — it’s a dangerous job, and these things happen and happen in a split second», - the producer pointed out. «This death comes as a shock because it is so simple and so rooted in the world in which all these characters work, that it is deeply tragic».
Acknowledging that the timing of Colby’s death «just breaks the soul», - Christina emphasized that it is simply a «risk of the job» that he signed up for.
