For fans of «Yellowstone», - it was a real shock to learn that Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) died before the events of the new spinoff «The Marshals», - which tells the story of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) working with a team of U.S. marshals to protect the state of Montana. In an interview following the premiere of the first season of «The Marshals», - showrunner Spencer Hadnat shared that they wanted to «honor» Monica’s memory on Kayce’s new journey.

According to Luke, the creative team behind «The Marshals» initially did not plan for Monica’s return. Therefore, it was not up to Kelsey from the very beginning. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly on March 1, 2026, the actor admitted that he «did not expect at all that [Monica would be dead] when he got the call with that idea».
«I felt two emotions at once. The first was that I was incredibly upset because Kelsey is one of my best friends and one of the coolest actors I’ve ever worked with», - Luke explained, adding, «We are very close, and for a while, I couldn’t imagine how it would be without her. I thought, 'This doesn’t even make sense. Kayce and Monica are one whole.' But I also realized that there is a bigger story there».
Luke went on to explain that his character needed to find something else worth fighting for, as «Yellowstone» had given him a pretty satisfying conclusion.
«The way 'Yellowstone' ended for Kayce—he literally rode off into the sunset», - Luke told the publication. «So when he and the creative team started discussing the story of 'The Marshals,' it became clear that something had to change. Obviously, we can’t just watch this guy live his dream. There’s no drama in that».
Luke added that «something» had to happen to disrupt Kayce’s perfect life. «Otherwise, why would he take the badge?» he asked. «The last time we saw him, he was throwing the badge into a field. Is he going to pick it up?»
Since Monica is dead, it is unlikely that she will return to «The Marshals», - but there is a chance she could appear in flashback scenes. Although no one from the cast or crew has confirmed this, showrunner Hadnat told EW that they want to «try to honor this character».
«And also use her death as a way to draw attention to the real issues facing reservations», - Hadnat continued. «She died, and that’s why Tate wanted to go to the rally, and that’s why Kayce is going to the rally. In that way, she really guides his path»
