Sofia Bush openly discussed her journey to accepting her sexuality and how it has helped her better understand herself. In an essay for Glamour in April 2024, she noted that she has always felt her sexuality as part of a spectrum, and the word that best defines her now is «queer».
The actress also confirmed her relationship with soccer player Ashlyn Harris, who filed for divorce from her wife Ali Krieger in October 2023. Meanwhile, Bush attracted attention in August 2023 when news broke of her separation from Grant Hughes, with whom she had been married for 13 months.
In her essay, Bush shared that as early as April 2022, she had considered calling off her wedding to Hughes, but instead decided to «double down» and become a «model wife». She recalled feeling her «blood drain from her face» when she saw Hughes' touching post in honor of their first anniversary.
Bush is now finding happiness in the LGBTQIA+ community. In the «Work in Progress» podcast in June 2024, she noted that this community has always been her home. She also emphasized that realizing her sexuality allowed her to «finally» breathe freely, adding that this feeling was «profound» and «liberating».
After coming out about her decision to live authentically, Bush thanked her fans for their support, writing on Instagram in April 2024: «Thank you for your kindness, vulnerability, and the stories you’ve shared».
In June 2024, two months after her coming out, Bush attended her first Pride event and shared an inspiring message: «You are perfect. No matter how long it takes, you will find your people».
She also recounted how her loved ones noticed her sexuality before she did. One friend, after her divorce from Hughes, told her that he believed she did not love men, which was an «epiphany» for Bush.
In an essay for Time in June 2025, she noted that publicly acknowledging her sexuality has been a freedom for her and that she has never felt more «at home» in herself.
