Sophie Turner breaks her silence about her divorce from Joe Jonas. The 28-year-old actress, known for her role in «Game of Thrones», - revealed that the «worst» part of her split with Jonas Brothers vocalist Joe, 34, last year was the «mom guilt» she felt due to unfounded rumors. The estranged couple are co-parenting their daughters Willa and Delphine together.
During an interview for British Vogue published on Wednesday, May 15, Sophie recalled the moment when their divorce with Joe made headlines in September 2023.
«It was the worst few days of my life», - she admitted to the publication. Sophie described the moment she saw headlines portraying her as a distant mother and partygoer. «I remember being on set, I had two weeks left on my contract, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States, and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out. It hurt because I really beat myself up over every step I take as a mother — the mom guilt is so real! I just kept telling myself, 'None of this is true. You’re a good mom, and you’ve never been a party girl.'»
Sophie continued, saying «it's unimaginable how many people just make up and publish things based on a photo».
«A picture can tell a thousand words, but it’s not my story», - she emphasized. «It felt like I was watching a movie about my life that I didn’t write, produce, or star in. It was shocking. I’m still in shock».
As she worked on Joan in Europe, the cast and crew supported Sophie while hurtful rumors unfolded in the US. Executive producer Ruth Kenley-Letts recalled how «shocking» it was to see her lead actress accused of partying while her children were in America with their father.
«It was absolutely shocking what happened to her. The paparazzi were ruthless», - Ruth said. «I remember we were shooting in Spain, on the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere, and they managed to get a photo of Sophie. I just couldn’t believe the lies I was reading that she was somehow partying. And I knew it was a lie because I was with her. I was with her for five months straight».
Sophie and Joe got married in 2019. In September 2023, they released a joint statement announcing their divorce. Shortly before that, they were involved in a custody battle over their daughters. At the time, Sophie claimed she found out about the divorce filing from Joe through the media, but his lawyer denied her accusations. Earlier this year, the former spouses reached a custody agreement, but their divorce has not yet been finalized.
During the split, Sophie began a relationship with boyfriend Peregrin Pearson, while Joe seems to have started a relationship with rumored girlfriend Stormi Bree. When photos of Sophie with friends and dates with Peregrin surfaced online, she recalled the days «when I didn’t know if I could handle» during her recent Vogue interview.
«I called my lawyer and said, 'I can’t do this. I just can’t.' I just never felt strong enough to defend myself», - she admitted. «And ultimately, after two weeks of my despair, she reminded me that I’m fighting for my children. When someone tells me, 'Do it for your kids,' I do it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them»
