«Spartan Academy in Palm Coast: The Path to Global Success in Jiu-Jitsu»

Palm Coast is not the place most people associate with world martial arts. It is a quiet, sun-soaked corner of northern Florida, better known for its bike paths and seaside cafes than for producing international champions.
However, at the Spartans Academy, led by Professor Igor Gabriel Prado Mansebo, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, something unusual is happening. This small town is beginning to gain recognition in one of the fastest-growing combat sports in the world. And this is thanks to a coach whose journey began across the ocean.
Under the guidance of Professor Igor Gabriel Prado Mansebo, the Spartans Academy has become one of the most stable centers for athlete development in the association. Mansebo’s gym in Palm Coast also serves as a pilot project: it tests training programs, conducts trials with visiting coaches, and shares what works within the association.
A Humble Beginning
Igor grew up in Niterói, a coastal city in Rio de Janeiro, where he first stepped onto the mats as a teenager, simply seeking confidence. What started as curiosity quickly became a way of life. He trained tirelessly, competed from his first year, and after more than a decade of grueling training, earned his black belt. This discipline, combined with humility and determination, shaped his future in ways he could never have imagined.
Years later, his life changed dramatically when he was invited to move to Florida and take the position of head coach at the academy in Palm Coast. This meant leaving Brazil, starting from scratch, learning a new language, and rebuilding his professional reputation in a completely new country.
Igor embraced this challenge, deeply believing that jiu-jitsu can change people’s lives.
When he took over in September 2020, Mansebo implemented changes that helped develop the academy and fostered the growth of Renato Tavares' association program. He divided classes by age and level, focusing each week on one technique, and created progressions that translate into live rounds. This model now serves as a benchmark for other gyms in planning their weeks, and Palm Coast functions as a hub for visiting coaches and athletes who come to enhance their competition preparation.
Today, the Spartans Academy is one of the most competitive, inclusive, and respected Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools in Florida. It has attracted attention not only in Florida. Under Igor’s leadership, the academy has transformed into a training center producing athletes who shine on the world stage. Its youth team includes students who have placed highly in IBJJF competitions. Adult students bring home medals from the biggest events in the sport: World Masters, Pan American Championships, and IBJJF International Opens.
Preparing for Success
Igor’s secret to success lies in a rare combination of technical expertise, leadership, and warmth. He is both a coach and a mentor who understands the challenges of competition because he continues to participate in them himself. As an active athlete who still wins titles at international IBJJF championships, he trains alongside his students, supporting them, sweating with them, and demonstrating through his own example what true discipline looks like.
However, what makes the Spartans Academy special compared to other competitive gyms is the atmosphere that Igor has intentionally created. Despite training world-class athletes, the academy is warm, friendly, and diverse. Children with autism train alongside elite competitors. Parents in their 40s and 50s train alongside teenagers striving for world titles. Many newcomers report increased confidence after training sessions. International guests specifically come to Palm Coast to train under Igor’s guidance, which continues to surprise the locals.
While trophies continue to accumulate, Igor takes pride above all in the transformations he witnesses. He enjoys watching shy children become leaders, bullied teenagers become fearless, and adults find strength and resilience they never suspected they had. «Consistency beats talent»
