In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the United States and Israel launched a coordinated military campaign against Iran on Saturday, February 28, marking a significant moment in the long-standing conflict between Tehran and its two powerful adversaries. Over the weekend, U.S. and Israeli forces struck Iranian military infrastructure, including missile bases, command centers, and defensive installations. The campaign culminated in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, confirmed President Donald Trump.

Here’s what is happening in Iran now, following the strikes that have made headlines for the first time.

In a video address to the public, Trump stated that U.S. and Israeli forces struck Iran due to its failure to comply with the nuclear standards set by the American president.

«They rejected every opportunity to abandon their nuclear ambitions, and we can no longer tolerate it», - Trump said in his statement on February 26. «Instead, they attempted to restore their nuclear program and continue developing long-range missiles that can now threaten our good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed abroad, and may soon reach American territory. … For these reasons, the U.S. armed forces are conducting a large-scale and ongoing operation to prevent this evil, radical dictatorship from posing a threat to America and our core national security interests».

In response to the missile strikes, Iran launched ballistic missiles and drone attacks against Israel and U.S. military bases in the Persian Gulf region. Explosions were reported in cities such as Tel Aviv and Dubai. Tehran promised «unprecedented retaliation» and activated its armed forces for a large-scale counteroffensive, according to several sources.

In his statement, Trump noted that casualties «often occur in war» as he warned that American servicemen could be injured or killed.

«The lives of brave American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. This often happens in war», - said the Republican president. «But we are not doing this for the present. We are doing this for the future. And this is a noble mission. We pray for every serviceman who selflessly risks his life to ensure that Americans and our children are never threatened by a nuclear Iran»
