Steve Sarkisian defends Arch Manning after loss criticism
The Texas Longhorns began the 2026 season with strong results, boasting 4 wins and 1 loss, including a victory over the previously top-ranked Ohio State. However, according to head coach Steve Sarkisian, expectations for quarterback Arch Manning, the nephew of legendary quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, remain high.

After a 27−24 loss to Oklahoma, in which Arch threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, Sarkisian noted that if the name on the jersey were different, the player would be praised for victories over four top-10 teams in the last 13 games. He added that Arch understands the high expectations associated with his last name and that the team needs to keep working.

Arch Manning, who is 22 years old, has completed five games with a 63% passing accuracy, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He stated that it is important not to let criticism affect his game and that he has a choice—to either keep fighting or let setbacks pull him down.

Criticism of Manning has also come from ESPN analysts. Paul Finebaum expressed doubts about his level of play, noting that he is not the elite player he has been portrayed as. Fox analyst Joel Klatt added that while Arch has moments of brilliance, he also makes serious mistakes that raise concerns.

The next game for the Texas Longhorns will be on October 17 against Florida in Austin.
