The plane was preparing to land, was at an altitude of about 400 feet, and was moving at a speed of 140 miles per hour. Around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, the plane collided in the air with a military helicopter, which was undergoing its annual mandatory night training exercise with three passengers on board. The military helicopter had arrived from the Davison Air Force Base in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, south of Washington.
The collision caused an explosion in the air, and American Airlines Flight broke in half and fell into the Potomac River. Over 300 rescuers are tirelessly searching for possible survivors in the Potomac River.
During a press conference, Fire Chief and EMS Director John Donnelly shared: «We are now transitioning from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. We do not believe there are any survivors after this crash», - according to Politico.
At the moment, 28 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter have been found, and experts have warned of possible hypothermia among survivors due to the icy temperature of the river. Among the passengers on the plane were figure skaters, their relatives, and coaches from Russia, who had arrived in Washington after participating in a training camp in Kansas
