18-year-old student dies after jumping from balcony following classmate attack

An 18-year-old student at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles jumped from the balcony of a four-story building after being attacked by a classmate. The incident occurred on September 30 and was captured on video.
The footage shows the student being subjected to both verbal and physical abuse by another student. An elderly teacher attempted to intervene and separate them, but the attacker continued to hit the victim until he fell to the ground. After that, when the injured student got up, the attacker said, «Run, [expletive] — run». The victim ran down an open gallery, followed by the attacker. Ultimately, he jumped over the balcony railing and fell from a height of four stories.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a report of the student’s fall was received around 1:00 PM on September 30. The names of the victim and the attacker have not yet been released, and authorities have not stated whether any charges have been filed in connection with the incident. However, police clarified that preliminary information indicates that the victim was not being actively pursued or threatened at the time he jumped.
School principal Marin Davtyan sent an email to the school community explaining that privacy laws prevent the disclosure of additional details about the tragedy. He emphasized that the well-being of the school community remains a priority, and mental health professionals will be available at the school to support students and staff.
Following the tragedy, police and the coroner’s office began interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage to determine the circumstances leading up to the jump. The school has also implemented additional security measures, including police patrols.
