Gina Rowlands' son, Nick Cassavetes, confirmed his mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis

The star of the movie «The Notebook» Gina Rowlands, son Nick Cassavetes, confirmed that his mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday during the celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary.
«I convinced my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time discussing Alzheimer’s disease and striving to be authentic, and now, in the last five years, she has Alzheimer’s disease», - added the 65-year-old director.
The 94-year-old actress played the famous role of older Allie Hamilton in the touching film, whose character, ironically, also suffered from dementia. Now Nick revealed that his mother is «completely in dementia, and it’s so strange — we lived through this, she played this, and now it’s on us».
During the making of the film, Gena remembered that she chose the role of Allie after seeing how her own mother struggled with the disease. «I went through this with my mom, and if Nick hadn’t made the film, I don’t think I would have dared to do it — it’s just too hard… It was a difficult but wonderful film», - shared the actress in O Magazine.
Despite the very touching plot of Nicholas Sparks' novel, the film has become an icon for every generation. «It's always shocking to realize how much time has passed, but it makes sense… It seems like everything worked out, and I’m very proud of it», - said the director to EW.
The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, has come a long way, now receiving its own Broadway musical. Rachel shared her thoughts on the upcoming project in an interview with Paul Wontorek for the Broadway show with Tamsen Fadal. «I can’t wait to see it… I think it’s so exciting. To see how it takes on a completely different life, it amazes me», - she shared. «We didn’t even know if anyone would see this movie when we were filming it, when we were drowning in the rain… The rain wasn’t real, it was pumped from the lake through fire hoses… It was a really powerful, scorching rain»
