Susan Sarandon and actress Hannah Einbinder were arrested in New York during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly. According to media reports, both actresses were among the demonstrators who were taken away in handcuffs during the protest outside the UN headquarters on September 24.

Also present at the rally was Saturday Night Live cast member Sarah Sherman. Given the escalation of the discussion surrounding the actions of the Israeli government following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, clashes between protesters and police are expected. A UN report published in June stated that since October 7, 20,000 children have died and more than 44,000 have been injured in the region. Israel has repeatedly rejected accusations of genocide and war crimes in Gaza.

Protests continued during the General Assembly meeting, where Netanyahu openly mocked delegations leaving the hall during his speech. He asked, «Where were you when the Iranian tyrants were cutting and mutilating tens of thousands of unarmed Iranian citizens?»

Both actresses actively support the Palestinian people in the ongoing conflict. In September 2025, Einbinder concluded her speech at the Emmy Awards ceremony by calling for justice for Palestinians. She noted that she believes it is important to speak out in defense of Palestinians and to be a voice during this difficult time. Sarandon has also expressed similar sentiments at the Venice Film Festival in 2026, stating that she has lost roles due to her stance on Palestine.

Sarandon was previously dropped by her agency, United Talent Agency, after comments about the Israel-Palestine conflict at a rally in New York in 2023. She later apologized for her remarks, explaining that she intended to express solidarity in the fight against all forms of bias.
