The franchise «The Hunger Games» continues thanks to the genius of Suzanne Collins! Fans have been asking the author for years to write the story of Haymitch Abernathy, and she did. Now, with the movie scheduled for 2026 with a new cast, new fans are curious about what «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» is and when exactly it takes place in the history of Panem.
Below, Hollywood Life reveals all the details you need to know about «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes», - from its plot and time period to the ending of the book.
Yes, «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» is a prequel to the original «Hunger Games» trilogy. This story focuses on Haymitch’s past before he met Katniss Everdeen as her mentor from District 12.
«The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» takes place in District 12 and in the Capitol 24 years before Katniss meets Haymitch. The book is set during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell in the history of Panem.
Haymitch is 16 years old in «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes». In the original «Hunger Games» trilogy, Katniss meets him when he is around 40 years old.
The film will follow the book as closely as possible, as was the case with previous installments, including «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes». So the ending of «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» will undoubtedly break the hearts of every viewer. (Warning: spoilers ahead for «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes». Proceed with caution.)
The book «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» ends with Haymitch winning the 50th Hunger Games, but he annoys President Coriolanus Snow with his attempts to resist the Capitol in the arena. So, in a truly Snow-like manner, the authoritarian president finds a way to harm those close to Haymitch. This includes his family and his girlfriend, Lenore Daw, who is at home in District 12 and is part of the Covenant.
Lenore Daw is no stranger to rebellion. A character from the same group as the former girlfriend of President Snow, Lucy Gray Baird, Lenore has gotten into trouble several times and even been arrested before Haymitch entered the game. When he returns home, the happy couple has a sweet, emotional reunion, and Lenore Daw brings a package of chewing gum that Haymitch gave her before leaving for the Capitol. Only it’s not the same package of gum he gave her; it’s poison. Haymitch quickly realizes this, but cannot save Lenore Daw from a broken heart. Meanwhile, his family and his entire home were also burned down.
Haymitch mourns his deceased girlfriend and family and becomes the same drunkard that Katniss meets 24 years later
