In today’s episode of completely unexpected events in the world of technology, the Duolingo owl mysteriously died. The popular language learning platform announced on February 11, 2025, that its icon had passed away, sparking many questions among app users. Social media exploded with speculation, with some pointing out that the presumed death occurred just hours after Duolingo made a clever reference to Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl, dissing Drake with his hit «Not Like Us».

In a statement released by a Duolingo representative in USA Today, the company said: «With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mascot, the owl named Duo. For many years, he tirelessly reminded millions of the need to do their language lessons — sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with relentless persistence. But even the most persistent bird can only take so much».

So what happened to the Duolingo owl? Read on to find out everything we know at this moment.

The Duolingo mascot was known as Duo Owl (full name: Duo Keishona Rene Lingo). It was a digital happy green owl that greeted users of Duolingo when using the app. According to the company, he was born in 1000 BC.

The cause of Duo Owl’s death is still under investigation, Duolingo reported in a statement on social media.

«With heavy hearts, we inform you that Duo, formerly known as Duolingo Owl, has passed away. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death, and we are fully cooperating», - the platform announced, adding jokingly: «Honestly, he probably died waiting for you to finish your lesson, but what do we know».

Duolingo jokingly added that they know Duo Owl «had many enemies» and asked the public to «refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments».

«If you are inclined to share, please also include your credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory», - Duolingo added (a company representative confirmed to USA Today that this was a joke and they do not encourage anyone to share their credit card information).

In the end of their statement, the app mentioned Duo Owl’s unrequited love for pop star Dua Lipa.

«We thank you for respecting Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time», - the statement concluded. Dua, along with many other celebrities, expressed their condolences to the late mascot online. The artist of «Illusion» wrote in a comment on Instagram: «Until death do us part».

It is currently unclear who Duolingo will replace their owl with — or if they will replace it at all
