Mysterious murder of JonBenet Ramsey: new series on Netflix
The holiday season of 1996 was completely disrupted after 6-year-old beauty pageant star JonBenet Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family’s home. Her case remains unsolved as a murder, but her immediate family — Patsy, John, and Burke Ramsey — were suspects for some time, and one person falsely confessed to her murder. Now in development is a script for a series dedicated to the child murder case.

Learn more about the JonBenet case below.

Although a ransom note was left for the Ramsey family at the time of JonBenet’s death, the Boulder, Colorado police initially suspected that Patsy and John staged the scene to avoid being implicated in their daughter’s death. They also did not fully cooperate with the police investigation. However, there was not enough evidence to support the theory that they killed their daughter.

JonBenet’s older brother Burke later became a public suspect, as some believed he hit his sister with a golf club. However, he was never officially named a suspect in the case, and he denied any wrongdoing in the years following JonBenet’s death.

After the introduction of DNA testing in 2002, authorities found the DNA of an unidentified man on JonBenet’s remains, which cleared the Ramseys from prosecution by the district attorney’s office. Seven years later, the Boulder police reopened the case.

In 2006, a man named Alexis Val Rey (who was then known as John Mark Karr) falsely confessed to JonBenet’s murder. He was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand. Despite his confession, authorities did not find DNA matches at the crime scene.

JonBenet’s parents vehemently deny any abuse and/or murder of their late daughter. Patsy died in 2006 after battling ovarian cancer, and John continues to refute rumors that he was involved in his daughter’s death.

In 2016, Burke sat down with Dr. Phil to explain everything he knew about his sister’s death. Since he was downstairs in the house that night, he explained that he was simply playing with a toy.

«Yes, I had some toy that I wanted to put together. I remember being downstairs after everyone went to bed … wanted to get that out», - Burke said. «I just remember being downstairs with that toy».

The Hollywood Reporter reported in March 2024 that a script for a series about the Ramsey case is in development. The show, titled «Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey», - is set to be released on Netflix on November 25. According to its description, the show will «detailedly describe the mysterious death and the surrounding media frenzy in the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, a case that captivated a whole nation and left us with more questions than answers»
