Michaela DePrince, a talented ballerina from Sierra Leone who captured the hearts of people around the world, has passed away. She was only 29 years old. The cause of her death has not been disclosed. According to a post on her official Instagram page on Friday, September 13, Michaela’s team confirmed the news. The caption began with the words: «Rest in peace: ballerina Michaela Mabinti DePrince».

Long before the start of her career, Michaela was placed in an orphanage in Sierra Leone during the civil war. During her time in the orphanage, Michaela was malnourished and subjected to cruel treatment — mainly due to her having a skin condition known as vitiligo. Throughout her dance career, a former member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem struggled with issues in the industry. As a black ballerina, Michaela was often overlooked for lead dance roles, such as the role of Marie in The Nutcracker.
Despite the trials she faced, Michaela continued her career, performing on Dancing With the Stars and in Beyoncé's music video «Freedom». She also appeared in the 2021 film «Coppélia».
In addition to dancing, Michaela also advocated for children and others affected by violence. She previously organized her gala evening «Dare to Dream», aimed at raising awareness for the mental health of children living in war-torn areas. Furthermore, Michaela was an ambassador for War Child Holland
