In March 2026, preliminary Senate elections took place in Texas, attracting attention as Democrats sought to shift the state’s political landscape from red to blue. Representative Jasmine Crockett entered the race with strong credentials, known for her compelling style and viral moments in Congress. However, Representative James Talarico emerged with full force. Meanwhile, the Republican primaries concluded with a runoff. Who emerged victorious among the Democrats and Republicans in the Texas Senate elections?
Talarico won the Democratic primary for the Texas Senate. According to polling results, Talarico received 52.8% of the votes, while Crockett garnered 45.9%.
Addressing supporters on Tuesday evening, Talarico stated, «We are not just trying to win elections. We are striving to fundamentally change our politics, and it is working».
In an interview with Politico before the elections, Talarico discussed the prospect of facing his Republican opponents: Attorney General Ken Paxton and Senator John Cornyn. Talarico labeled both as «extremely weak».
«Paxton and Cornyn are different things», - he acknowledged. «Paxton is guilty of illegal corruption. That’s why my colleagues and I impeached him in the Texas House. But Cornyn is guilty of legalized corruption. He was the deciding vote on the Big, Ugly Bill that stripped millions of Texans of healthcare and took food from hungry children in Texas to provide tax breaks for his donors. Both are guilty of using their public offices to enrich their donors—Ken Paxton illegally, and John Cornyn legally. I look forward to holding either of them accountable—whoever makes it to the final».
Republican Cornyn was forced to participate in an electoral runoff against Paxton. Although neither was declared the winner, Cornyn received the most votes—41.9%, while Paxton received 40.7%. The runoff will take place on May 26.
A runoff is a repeat election to determine a winner when no candidate in the previous election received the required number of votes. Runoffs can occur in both primary and general elections in the United States
