In the history of the grave robber and killer Edward «Ed» Gein, there is one key figure — Adeline Watkins. She claimed to have been Gein’s girlfriend and her role is played by actress Suzanne Son in the Netflix series «Monster: The Ed Gein Story». The series sparked interest in viewers about the real woman from Wisconsin and her alleged connection to the «Plainfield Butcher». So, was Watkins really Gein’s girlfriend, and what happened to her?

Hollywood Life provides all the details known about Watkins at the moment.

Also known as the «Plainfield Butcher», Gein was a serial killer and grave robber who committed his crimes in Plainfield, Wisconsin, in the 1950s. Police discovered that he exhumed buried bodies and kept their remains as souvenirs in his home. He made masks, bowls, lampshades, and other items from human skin, bones, and body parts. Gein also confessed to the murders of tavern owner Mary Hogan and hardware store owner Bernice Worden in 1957.

Gein’s horrific crimes shocked the nation throughout the 50s and 60s. He was arrested in 1957 and was held in a psychiatric institution until he was deemed fit for trial. In 1968, he was declared legally insane and spent the rest of his life at the Mendota Mental Health Institute until he died in 1984 from respiratory failure. He was 77 years old.

Watkins, a resident of Plainfield, Wisconsin, claimed to have been Gein’s girlfriend for 20 years. Gein never confirmed or denied this.

Shortly after Gein’s arrest in 1957, Watkins gave an interview to the Minneapolis Tribune and described her alleged years of relationship with Gein.

«Eddie and I discussed books», - she claimed at the time. «We never read the same ones, but we liked talking about it… I think we discussed every murder we ever heard of. Eddie would tell [me] how the killer did wrong, what mistakes he made. I found it interesting».

Watkins claimed that Gein proposed to her on their last date in 1955, but she turned him down.

«I turned him down, but not because there was anything wrong with him», - she said. «It was something wrong with me. I guess I was afraid I couldn’t live up to his expectations… I loved him and still do».

Referring to Gein as «Eddie», Watkins described him as «such a good guy». However, she later changed her statements about Gein and told the Plainfield Sun newspaper that she was never a «close friend» of Gein, just a friend.

«There was no romance for 20 years», - she said.
