In South Carolina, a mother has been arrested after reportedly attacking her two children with a knife, resulting in her 6-year-old son sustaining such serious injuries that he may require amputation. Taylor Gosnell has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.
According to Fox Carolina, the 35-year-old Gosnell was arrested on September 26 after reports emerged that she had harmed her 3-year-old and 6-year-old children. A representative from the 7th Judicial Circuit’s office stated at a bond hearing on September 27 that police learned of the incident after a welfare check was requested. Reports indicate that her ex-boyfriend contacted authorities and informed them that the children «were left home alone».
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found the children «covered in blood» and with «multiple cuts». The investigation revealed that the attack occurred the day before the police were called. It was also noted that there was damage in the home, including a broken television and mirror.
Gosnell reportedly appeared at the scene shortly after police arrived and behaved in a «rapid and anxious» manner. Authorities became concerned when she stated that she was experiencing «visions». At one point, she attempted to leave the scene, which led to her being handcuffed and transported on a stretcher. Once she was under control, she was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
After her arrest, Gosnell’s children were placed under protective custody and received treatment at Spartanburg Medical Center. Although the exact injuries were not disclosed, authorities reported that both children are expected to survive. Prosecutors at the bond hearing stated that the children have «very serious injuries», - including cuts «so deep that they reach the bone». The injuries to the 6-year-old boy were so severe that he may require amputation of fingers and «possibly, his hand».
Gosnell has been denied bail, and a district court judge is set to determine the next steps in her case. It is currently unclear whether she has entered a plea or hired an attorney following her arrest. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the 7th Judicial Circuit’s office did not respond to requests for comments on the case.
