Taylor Swift has opened up for the first time about how she felt after canceling three dates of her Eras tour in Vienna earlier this month, saying it filled her with a «new sense of fear».
In her Instagram post on Wednesday, marking the end of the European leg of her tour, which concluded on Tuesday at Wembley Stadium in London, Swift wrote about the «rollercoaster of emotions» she experienced.
«The cancellation of our shows in Vienna was devastating. The reason for the cancellation filled me with a new sense of fear and immense guilt, because so many people had planned to attend these concerts», - said the 34-year-old singer in her first public comments on the incident.
«But I was also grateful to the authorities, because thanks to them we mourned concerts, not lives».
Authorities in Austria said they had detained two men accused of planning a terrorist attack. One of the men, they said, had recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State online and had chosen the Eras tour as a potential target. Nearly 200,000 people were expected to attend the concerts in Vienna, which were scheduled for August 8.
«I was inspired by the love and unity I saw from fans coming together», - she continued. «I decided that all my energy needed to be focused on protecting nearly half a million people who came to see the show in London».
She addressed fans who noticed she had not expressed her position in the days following the cancellation, explaining that her focus was on safely completing the Eras tour. «Let me be very clear: I will not speak publicly about anything if I believe it could provoke those who would harm fans attending my concerts».
«In cases like this, 'silence' actually shows restraint and waiting for the right moment to express oneself», - she wrote.
«My priority was the safe completion of our European tour, and I can say with great relief that we accomplished that. And London felt like a beautiful dreamy sequence. The energy in that stadium was like the biggest hug from 92,000 people every night, and it brought me back to a place of carefree peace there».
In another comment on the same post, she thanked her unexpected guests Ed Sheeran, Florence Welch, and Jack Antonoff, as well as, of course, her fans.
«Fans who saw us this summer, you will always have the most sparkling place in my memories. You were a dream for performances, dancing, and shared magical moments»
