At the 2026 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift premiered her new music video for the song «Patient Zero» and received her first Artist Director Honors Award.
In her acceptance speech, Taylor noted that over the years she has been able to co-direct around 60 music videos and emphasized that it is the fans who make this process exciting.
In the new video she presented, Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell play the lead roles. Johnson portrays a woman in a psychologically challenging relationship with a controlling man, while Taylor plays the role of a sister trying to help her cope with the situation.
The video dramatizes relationships from which, according to Taylor, she has «walked away». In the song, she sings: «I know it seems like he shines so bright, but he bathes in your reflected light». Taylor refers to herself as «patient zero», - as she considers herself the first woman who got tired of this man, and calls out to a new victim: «If you’re tired of him, I’m with you / I was patient zero».
