Two years after Alex Jones and his website «InfoWars» went bankrupt, the conspiracy website was acquired by The Onion. After an auction, Jones' platform will be reimagined by the satirical publisher, who has criticized Jones for many years, as seen in some of the satirical stories they have published.
Find out what The Onion plans to do with «InfoWars» here.
«InfoWars» is an extremely right-wing political website founded in 1999. It was operated by Free Speech Systems LLC. Known for its controversial statements and positions — including its unfounded conspiracy theory about the Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut — Jones led the platform for many years.
On November 14, 2024, several sources reported that the satirical publisher The Onion had acquired «InfoWars» at a bankruptcy auction. According to NBC News, The Onion will restructure «InfoWars» with a focus on internet humor and will shut down Jones' content, which is controversial and contains false information.
On that day, Jones posted a video on his X account, noting that his platform was shut down «without a court order».
«I found out about this 15 minutes ago, my lawyers and staff met with the bankruptcy trustee this morning, and they were told they were shutting us down even without a court order», - explained Jones, adding: «I don’t know what will happen, but I’ll be here until they come and turn off the lights».
A letter published on The Onion’s website noted that the «decision to acquire 'InfoWars' was an easy one».
«Throughout its entire existence, InfoWars has shown a consistent desire to create anger and radicalize the most vulnerable members of society», - the letter read.
Other bidders at the auction were not disclosed.
Jones and «InfoWars» have faced numerous legal issues over the years, but the most significant case was when the families of Sandy Hook school sued him. Jones was found guilty of defamation, and the jury awarded the families over $ 1 billion in their lawsuits against the conspiracy theorist. However, Jones claimed he was unable to pay them this amount, and Free Speech Systems filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2022
