Pacific tsunami: Hawaii under threat after powerful earthquake in Russia
30 july 2025 в 16:13
Hawaii was issued a tsunami warning shortly after one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded occurred in the Russian Far East region on Tuesday, July 29. The 8.8 magnitude earthquake did not result in mass casualties as the Russian territory is not densely populated. However, the ripple effect from the massive jolt reached Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States. Now, as California, Washington, and Oregon await the lifting of the warning, many are wondering if Hawaii was affected by the tsunami.

A tsunami warning is issued when «the potential for widespread inundation is imminent, expected, or occurring», - according to the NOAA website.
«Warnings inform the public that dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after the initial arrival», - the website states. «Warnings alert emergency management officials to take action for the entire tsunami hazard zone».

NOAA also states that during a tsunami warning, «local officials may take appropriate action, including evacuating low-lying coastal areas and moving vessels to deep waters if there is time for safe execution».
The difference between a tsunami warning and an advisory is that an advisory is issued when dangerous tsunami waves are «imminent, expected, or occurring», - according to NOAA. Additionally, during an advisory, the tsunami threat «may continue for several hours after the initial arrival, but significant inundation is not expected for areas under advisory».
During a tsunami advisory, local officials may close beaches and evacuate harbors and/or marinas.
Around 2:00 Eastern Time / 8:00 Greenwich Time, Hawaii was hit by the tsunami. However, they did not cause any destructive damage. Governor Josh Green told reporters that «it was like a blessing not to report any damage», - according to NBC News. Although residents of Hawaii saw «significant water recession several times in Haleiwa, and two waves passing through Midway Atoll were recorded», - they were fine at that time.
Waves nearly 6 feet high were recorded on Maui that evening. By early Wednesday morning, July 30, the tsunami warning was lifted.
Flights were canceled incoming and outgoing from Hawaii on July 29. By early morning on July 30, Hawaiian Airlines reported that operations had resumed
