TikTok stopped working for all American influencers and users a few hours before the ban came into effect on January 19, 2025. When people in the US opened their apps and found they could no longer post videos, social media was filled with memes and jokes saying «RIP». This popular social platform became one of the most popular worldwide, but TikTok was also a place where many influencers started their careers. So, how long can TikTok be banned in the US?

Below is everything we know about the TikTok ban and how long it may last.

TikTok is now banned in the US because lawmakers in America expressed concerns about the app’s security. The government was worried that the Chinese government could access data of American users on the social platform and use it to spread misinformation.

TikTok is owned by a company called ByteDance, headquartered in Beijing, China. Congress gave them time to sell the app to a US-approved company; otherwise, the app would be banned in America. President Joe Biden signed the legislation in mid-2024, and the Supreme Court upheld the legislation shortly before the ban came into effect in January 2025.

Technically, American TikTok users can still use their accounts, but they cannot post new content, reshare their friends' posts, or buy anything in the app store. Each user’s profile and their videos have not been deleted. Trying to open the app on January 18, everyone in America was greeted with the following message: «Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. A law has been passed in the US banning TikTok. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok at this time. We are glad that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on resolving the issue of restoring TikTok after taking office. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still log in to download your data».

Donald Trump expressed interest in providing a legal extension of the ban. Responding to a question about it, he told reporters that a 90-day extension «definitely [will] be an option» worth considering.

«A 90-day extension is something that probably will be done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate», - Trump said, according to NBC News. «We have to look at it very carefully. It’s a very serious situation».

The Republican added that if he «decides» to do it, he will «probably announce it on Monday», - referring to his inauguration
