During the preparation for the 2024 presidential elections, Tim Walz, recently elected as Kamala Harris' partner, along with his wife Gwen, opened up about their son Gus’s disorder.
In a recent interview with People magazine, 60-year-old Tim shared that his 17-year-old son suffers from ADHD, anxiety, and nonverbal disorder. According to the Minnesota governor, they noticed signs at an early age when he spent most of his time playing video games and preferred to spend more time alone, which made them notice differences in his behavior compared to other children.
Tim and his 58-year-old wife expressed: «Like many American families, it took us time to understand how to do everything possible to ensure Gus’s success in his growth».
They added: «It took us time, but it became clear to us immediately that Gus’s condition is not a hindrance — it is his secret strength».
The couple, who have been married since 1994, also have a daughter named Hope. Tim told the Star Tribune in 2023 that they faced difficulties trying to conceive their first daughter, but ultimately underwent infertility treatment.
Throughout their son’s life, the family has been able to witness Gus reaching significant milestones, such as when he got his driver’s license. Tim and Gwen told the publication that they «love» their son and that «he is brilliant, hyper-attentive to details that many of us overlook, and above all, he is a great son and brother to his brother».
Now, as the father of two children serves as the vice president to 59-year-old Kamala Harris, they are «excited» that Gus will be able to follow the path to the presidency with them. Tim, who was chosen as a partner on August 5, shared at a pre-election rally with Kamala: «I couldn’t be prouder to be on this ticket and helping Vice President Harris become what we all know very, very well for us to think: the next President of the United States of America»
