Yes, Chalamet performed all the songs in the biographical film about Bob Dylan.
Initially, the actor recorded his vocals to portray the iconic folk-rock singer and songwriter. However, the film’s director, James Mangold, revealed that they «did not use them in the film». Instead, because Chalamet’s live performance effectively captured the essence of the singer, they decided to use the actual performance.
«When I first met Tim, I heard some things they had pre-recorded, and I asked, 'Who's singing this music?'» said Rob Paparozzi, Chalamet’s harmonica coach on «The Full Stranger», - to The Post. «He said, 'It's me. I sing all my parts.' I was amazed because I was so impressed… Timmy had already put in a lot of work and was attached to it. It’s not like he just wanted to cheat».
Todd Maitland, the film’s sound mixer, told Variety that Chalamet had to work hard to match Dylan’s unique singing style.
«Bob is a mumbler, and Timmy gave his best mumble, so it was pulling that out. He went from there to that hard voice that could pierce your eardrums», - Maitland said. «But there were at least four different voices inside Timmy, capturing all of this and giving each character. It was a completely different dimension».
To portray Dylan, Chalamet had to learn to play a couple of instruments, such as the guitar, in addition to singing.
Guitar coach Larry Soltzman, who started working with Chalamet in 2019, told the New York Post that the actor «immediately» took to playing the guitar.
«He never got stuck on anything. He just rose to the occasion every time. It’s a combination of hard work and natural talent», - Soltzman added
