Aileen Wuornos, known for her confession to the murder of seven men while working as a sex worker in Florida, made this confession under the influence of her then-girlfriend Tyria Moore.
Wuornos’s life and crimes have been the subject of several documentaries and artistic projects. The latest of these is the documentary series Investigation Discovery «Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos», - which explores her backstory by analyzing evidence and testimonies. The series is set to premiere on September 30, 2026.
Tyria Moore grew up in a middle-class family in Cadiz, Ohio. Not much is known about her life before meeting Wuornos, although at the time of their acquaintance, she was living with friends. Moore was working as a maid at a motel in Florida when she met Wuornos in 1986. Wuornos was 30 years old at the time, while Moore was around 25.
The couple first met at the Zodiac gay bar in South Daytona, Florida, in 1986. Wuornos moved to Florida from Michigan after marrying a man who was 50 years older than her. The marriage was annulled a month after the wedding, and by the time she met Moore, Wuornos was working as a sex worker. They quickly grew close and soon began living together.
Although little is known about their relationship, Moore told police that they became lovers, and then their bond took on a sisterly nature. Nevertheless, Wuornos referred to Moore as «the love of her life». The couple faced financial difficulties: after they met, Moore quit her job, and Wuornos supported them both with her income from prostitution. Wuornos stated that «the only reason she worked so hard all those years was to support Moore».
Wuornos committed her first known murder in November 1989 when she killed Richard Mallory. Afterward, she allegedly confessed to Moore about the crime, but Moore refused to discuss the matter. Wuornos subsequently killed six more men, claiming she acted in self-defense.
When police began to suspect Wuornos of the murders in late 1990, they approached Moore to persuade her to get Wuornos to confess. Despite their romantic relationship, Moore denied any involvement in the crimes and was not charged in connection with the murders. She became a key witness in Wuornos’s 1992 trial for the murder of Mallory, confirming that she did not believe Wuornos’s confession.
On January 31, 1992, Wuornos was sentenced to death for the murder of Mallory. The following year, she pleaded guilty to other murders. Wuornos was executed on October 9, 2022.
After the trial, Moore rarely appeared in public, and little is known about her life today.
