Tom Cruise is back in action to take on another almost impossible mission in the film «Mission: Impossible — Last Payoff». Since the original title of the film was «Dead Payoff: Part Two», fans were wondering if the transition to «last payoff» meant that this could be the last installment of the «Mission: Impossible» series. The full trailer, which aired during the Super Bowl in February 2025, hinted that this could be the «last time» with the Impossible Mission Team. So is MI8 really the final film of the franchise?

Get all the details about the film «Mission: Impossible — Last Payoff» below.

The eighth installment is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 23, 2025 — almost 30 years after the premiere of the original «Mission: Impossible» in 1996.

The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has previously worked on several parts of the franchise.

Originally conceived as «Part Two» of the film «Mission: Impossible — Dead Payoff Part One», the film continues the story, but the title was changed to «Last Payoff», although many expected «Part Two».

When the seventh film was released, Cruise wrote on his Instagram: «I am so grateful that I can travel the world to bring you these movies». He truly took on the role and accepted a challenge worthy of «Mission: Impossible», traveling to four cities in the US — Toronto, Washington, Atlanta, and Miami, to surprise fans at screenings in 2023.

«Mission: Impossible 8» features a returning cast led by Cruise as Ethan Hunt. Joining him are Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby, reprising their roles from previous installments. The film will also feature Esai Morales as the main villain, as well as Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, and Shea Whigham in supporting roles.

Although the word «last» implies that this could be Ethan Hunt’s (Cruise's character) final mission, it is still unclear whether this will be the last film in the franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount wanted to promote the film as the «final» chapter to increase engagement. However, in the trailer, Tom asks the other members of the Impossible Mission Team to join him «one last time».

When asked if this film is his last in the role of Ethan Hunt, Cruise simply said: «I would prefer people to just watch and enjoy».

As one of Hollywood’s most experienced stunt performers, Tom has performed some of the most dangerous stunts in cinematic history while filming the «Mission: Impossible» movies. For the eighth installment, the actor told Empire magazine that he «blacked out» several times during the filming of a scene hanging on the wing of a 20th-century Boeing Stearman airplane. This sequence was shot at an altitude of 10,000 feet.

«When you stick your face out, moving at speeds of over 120−130 miles per hour, you don’t get oxygen», - Tom told the publication in February 2025. «So I had to learn how to breathe. There were moments when I physically blacked out; I couldn’t get back into the cabin»
