Tom Daley officially ended his career in competitive diving, as he confirmed. After leaving his fifth Olympic Games, the 30-year-old athlete cried during a television interview with the BBC on Monday, August 12, as countless fans surrounded him to welcome him home.

«It's hard to talk about it, it’s emotional», - Tom explained as tears began to well up in his eyes. The host gave him a moment and noted, «The whole of Great Britain is so proud of you, and it’s so great that you came back with a silver medal».

Tom made his Olympic debut at the Beijing Games in 2008 and then won bronze medals at the Olympics in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Tom took home gold and bronze medals. This time he won a silver medal.

During his recent interview after the Olympics, the TV host explained the reason why he wanted to retire from the sport.

«I want to be with my family», - he said, addressing his husband Dustin Lance Black and their children, Robbie and Phoenix. «I'm really looking forward to spending some time with them and just feeling a bit normal for a couple of days. But, yeah, it’s amazing. I didn’t plan for it to all pan out like this, but I’m very proud of my career».

Reflecting on his career, Tom added that his retirement seems «a lot» to many, but he is still «very happy with how everything turned out».

«I just think it’s always hard when you say goodbye to your sport», - he explained. «There's a lot to process, but I think it’s the right time. This year felt like such a bonus».

After the host noted that his children must be «very proud» of him, Tom replied, «Yes, I’d like to think they’re very proud of me». As he still held back tears, the five-time Olympian added that he didn’t expect it to be difficult for him to «actually speak» at that moment.

«The support I’ve received from Britain has been so incredible», - he concluded. «Thank you to everyone who has been with me throughout all of this. I think it’s the end of an era, but I can look back on my 23 years and be very proud»
