Tom Lehrer: from mathematician to cult musical figure
28 july 2025 в 17:13
Before becoming a cult musical figure, Lerer studied mathematics at Harvard at the age of just 15. Later, he taught mathematics and musical theater at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
In 2020, Lerer released all of his lyrics and music into the public domain, encouraging people to use, share, and adapt his work freely. He wrote on his website: «I, Tom Lerer, hereby grant all the rights I may have to all my songs to the public domain».
Despite his fame, Lerer remained extremely private. He never married, had children, and largely withdrew from public life after the 1960s, at the peak of his popularity. He rarely gave interviews and once joked that he retired because the world had become too absurd for satire, famously stating: «Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize».
Lerer’s death was confirmed by his friend David Herder, who said that the cause of death was not disclosed
