Tom Llamas will replace Lester Holt when he steps down as anchor of NBC Nightly News. Lester’s announcement of his departure from the program and focus on his role in Dateline shocked viewers, but the news network praised Tom’s abilities and assured everyone that the show will be in good hands.

«Tom possesses a winning combination of journalistic skill, passionate storytelling, and unwavering honesty — all characteristics that have long been hallmarks of NBC Nightly News», - said NBC News Executive Vice President of Programming Janelle Rodriguez to staff. «Additionally, he played a key role in the development of NBC News NOW into a leading streaming news network, helping introduce NBC News to a new generation of viewers».

As viewers get to know Tom, we have gathered five facts about him and his career below.

Tom has been working at the news network since 2000, when he began his career in broadcasting. Originally from Miami, he worked in the NBC Specials unit before moving to MSNBC to cover politics until 2005. Over the next few years, Tom worked as a reporter and anchor, working in Miami and New York with NBC.

From 2014 to 2021, Tom did not work with NBC. Upon returning to his home network, the award-winning journalist became the national senior correspondent for NBC News and became the anchor of NBC News NOW. Focusing on politics, Tom had the opportunity to interview several world leaders, including Donald Trump, his wife Melania Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In 2025, NBC gave Tom the position of anchor on NBC Nightly News, which was originally held by Lester.

«I look forward to working with world-class journalists on Nightly News and Top Story to present viewers with the most important stories every evening», - Tom said in a statement quoted by NBC, before praising his colleague. «Lester Holt is a great man and one of the most trusted anchors of our time. Like Lester, I promise to be loyal to our viewers and dedicated to the truth».

The respected journalist has received numerous awards, including «Best Anchor» and «Best Hard News».

In 2014, Tom left NBC to join ABC News as a correspondent in New York. Furthermore, he has filled in for ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir several times.

Tom left his position at ABC in 2021 to return to NBC.

Tom is the father of three children, whom he raises with his wife Jennifer.

Tom was born and raised in Miami and is the son of Cuban refugees. His mother is from Havana, and his father grew up in Oriente. As of today, Tom shared about his parents in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month in September 2021.

«Right after [Fidel] Castro came to power, my mom left [Cuba]», - Tom shared. «My dad’s family left a few years later. They both came to this country with nothing and worked their way up. They were happy to be in a country where they had freedom of religion and freedom of speech and all these things that make the United States a very unique and special place. They met in high school in Miami»
