Thomas «Tom» Homan — Donald Trump’s right-hand man in deportation control. Homan recently faced public criticism for the deportation of a 2-year-old child to Honduras with his mother, who was deported back to the country in April 2025. During an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS News' Face the Nation, Homan insisted that «procedure was followed» in this situation and that the child was not deported, but his mother chose to take him with her. The interview took place after federal judge Terry Doughty of Louisiana stated that there was a «strong suspicion that the government simply deported a U.S. citizen without due process».
Homan stated that the child’s mother «went through the process at taxpayer expense and was sentenced by an immigration judge after those hearings, so she was given due process».
«The 2-year-old child went with his mom. Mom signed a paper saying, 'I want my 2-year-old child to go with me,'» Homan said on CBS on April 27, 2025. «This is a parent’s decision, not a government decision». He also noted that «we do not deport U.S. citizens» and said that in this case «the mother chose to take the children with her».
In addition to the younger daughter, her 11-year-old sister was also sent back to Honduras with their mother.
«You can decide to take this child with you, or leave the child here with a relative or another spouse», - Homan concluded in his interview for CBS News.
Homan is known as the «border czar» in the Trump administration. He previously worked as a political commentator, law enforcement officer, and acting director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from January 2017 to January 2018. He was appointed by former President Barack Obama as the executive associate director for enforcement and removal operations in 2013.
Homan is 63 years old as of April 2025.
As Trump’s border czar, Homan’s official title is the executive associate director for enforcement and removal operations at the White House. A «czar» is a person appointed by the president without the need for Senate confirmation. Homan is responsible for the southern and northern borders of the United States.
The White House stated that since Trump took office on January 20, more than 100,000 illegal immigrants have been deported from the U.S., according to Newsweek
