The 64-year-old actor opened the event on Monday, August 19, supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.
«For the next four days, we will be bringing people from all over the country, people from all walks of life, to talk about this country that we love, and about a candidate who has dedicated her life to public service, who never shies away from a righteous fight and always stands up for the people», - Tony began in his speech.
Pointing out that the 2024 presidential election is not just «a choice between two very different candidates», - Tony noted that it is actually a choice between «two very different futures» for America, hinting at the policies of Republican candidate Donald Trump compared to Kamala.
«We will hear from ordinary Americans about what is really at stake in this campaign», - emphasized the star of «Divergent».
Describing the difference between Kamala’s vision of America’s future compared to Donald’s vision, Tony said that her message is «joyful, not hateful».
«Public service is not self-service, optimism and opportunities, not chaos and division», - he added. «This message has awakened us to who we are, who we have always been. Because Americans are not a cynical people. We are not narrow-minded».
After Tony noted that the «future president of the United States» would speak later that evening, he added: «Whether we realize it or not, we are already writing a new chapter in American history. And we can dream as big as we want».
In addition to Tony, this year’s DNC hosts will include «The View» host Ana Navarro, «The Mindy Project» participant Mindy Kaling, and Tony’s former co-star on «Scandal», - Kerry Washington.
