The disappearance and death of Gabby Petito have been a national tragedy since 2021. The 22-year-old blogger was killed during a cross-country trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie and his parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, who have become the most controversial figures in the case. Now, with Netflix releasing its documentary series on the case, «American Murder: Gabby Petito», - viewers are wondering what happened to Brian’s parents.

In 2022 and 2023, the Petito family filed several lawsuits related to the death of their late daughter. In November 2023, they filed a lawsuit against the Laundries and their lawyer for emotional distress, claiming that Christopher and Roberta withheld information about Gabby’s death, citing multiple sources. In early 2024, the Petito and Laundrie families reached an agreement regarding the lawsuit about emotional distress.

Find out what happened to Brian’s parents, Christopher and Roberta, after his death.

Brian confessed to killing Gabby in a letter that was found near his skeletal remains in Florida. He claimed that before her death, Gabby fell into icy water and shivered, so he decided to end her life.

«I thought it was merciful, that it was what she wanted, but now I see all the mistakes I made», - the letter read. «I panicked, I was shocked. But from the moment I decided to take away her pain, I realized I couldn’t live without her».

Brian wrote that Gabby was the «love of his life» and apologized to her family.

«I am very sorry to her family because I love them», - he added in the letter. «I considered her younger brothers my best friends… I am sorry to my family, this is a shock to them, as well as a terrible sadness».

Brian took his own life, as confirmed by authorities when his remains were found in the Myakka Haci Environmental Park in Florida. He wrote in his letter that he was «ending his life not out of fear of punishment, but because he could not bear to live another day without Gabby».

«I have lost our shared future, every moment we could have shared», - Brian’s letter read. «I apologize for the loss of each. Please do not make life harder for my family, they have lost a son and daughter. The most wonderful girl in the world. Gabby, I apologize… I killed myself at this stream in the hope that animals will tear me apart. That it may bring joy to part of her family».

Christopher and Roberta have been living a secluded life since their son’s death. The last update the public received about the couple was in February 2024, when Laundrie’s lawyer, Steve Bertolino, told Fox News that they and the Petito family had reached an agreement on the emotional distress lawsuit. The agreement happened several months before the case was supposed to go to trial.
