In June 2023, five passengers died aboard the submarine Titan, operated by OceanGate Inc. During an expedition to view the wreckage of the Titanic, the vessel was unable to safely resurface. After a four-day search, officials reported that the submarine had ruptured. Over a year after the disaster, the last message from Titan was revealed.
Learn more about the Titan expedition, its final moments, and much more below.
In June 2023, Titan descended into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. One hour and 45 minutes after the start of the voyage, the mother ship Titan, Polar Prince, lost contact with the submarine. After Titan failed to return to the surface, authorities were notified, and the search for the passengers began.
After four days of searching, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) discovered wreckage on the ocean floor resembling Titan. The wreckage was located approximately 500 meters from the Titanic.
Officials then informed the public that the pressure in Titan’s hull had dropped during the descent. According to the US Coast Guard and other officials, all five passengers on board were killed instantly.
In September 2024, former OceanGate contractor Tim Patterson testified that there were no «red flags» regarding the submarine on the day it went to the bottom.
«Considering who was in the cabin with Stockton at the time — there were two billionaires with him — I absolutely guarantee he was trying to make sure everything went absolutely perfectly and precisely», - Patterson said, according to ABC News. «These were all theories that were just flying between people who were completely sleepless and very excited. This is the worst thing that could have happened».
The five passengers of Titan were Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Davud, his 19-year-old son Suleiman Davud, British businessman Hamis Harding, former commander of the French fleet and submarine pilot Paul-Henri Nargole, and American pilot and engineer of the submarine Stockton Rash.
In September 2024, the last message from Titan was revealed. According to ABC News, the message was «All is well here», - which was received at a depth of 2274 meters. A photograph of what remained of Titan OceanGate was also presented to the public
